INEC extends voting time in Edo election
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has extended voting time in the Edo State governorship election in areas where there was late opening of polls.
INEC National Commissioner and member of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in a statement this afternoon.
He said the Commission was monitoring the ongoing governorship election in Edo State “from our situation room at the National Headquarters in Abuja.”
According to Haruna, “Our monitoring indicates early commencement of polls in many polling units, but there are also reports of late commencement in some locations.
“To ensure that no voter is disenfranchised, the Commission wishes to reiterate that, in line with our Regulations and Guidelines, voting will be extended wherever it commenced late and will continue until the last voter on the queue, who arrived at the polling unit by 2.30 p.m., has voted.
“Accordingly, we have drawn the attention of our office in Edo State to ensure that, where necessary, there is adequate power supply from our back-up electric generators in the affected polling units or ward collation centres,” Haruna added.

Voting commenced early with the arrival of materials at Egware Primary School, Ujiogba Ward II units 2, 3 and 11 in Esan West LGA of Edo State, with voters thrilled to exercise their rights.
According to 76-year-old Pa Robert Eguekagbon, who spoke to Vanguard, materials arrived before 8 a.m., and he was pleased with the ease of the process.
In his words: “Materials came early about 8 a.m. I came and was accredited and I have voted. It was good and smooth.”
An INEC official, who refused to mention her name, said the process is seamless as they have no issues with network failures and all machines are working perfectly.
Voters came out early and conducted themselves in orderly manners with the elderly lining up as some searched for their names in the voters register.

Heavy security presence, major roads blocked
By Akpokona Omafuaire, Benin-City
There is a heavy security presence across Benin City on election day, as fearful-looking soldiers blocked all major roads, while voters trek distances to their polling units.
At Sakponba Road, Vanguard observed that as early as 4 a.m., security men have used tyres to condone off the main road.
People, who left early to get to vote were stopped and searched thoroughly. But at 6 a.m., the roads were completely shut down.
Those who understand the road network had to divert to streets to get to their locations.
It was observed that people on essential services were allowed to move after a scrutiny and search.
