ENTERTAINMENT: FELA BECOMES FIRST AFRICAN ARTIST TO BE INDUCTED INTO ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME.

The 2026 Induction
Announced April 13, 2026 during the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Night episode of American Idol by Lionel Richie and Ryan Seacres. Rock and Roll honors artists whose music and performance style directly influenced rock & roll
The Ceremony is slated to be on November 14, 2026 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, airing December on ABC/Disney+

Other 2026 Early Influence honorees includes Celia Cruz, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons

The Hall cited Fela as the “pioneer of Afrobeat”, blending West African musical traditions with American funk and jazz. The Rock Hall said he altered the industry with his originality, impact and influence.

It was a double win for Nigeria as both Fela Kuti and Sade Adu Nigerian-born British were inducted with Sade Adu being inducted into Performance category alongside Wu-Tang Clan, Luther Vandross, Phil Collins, Oasis, Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order

Prior to this honour, Fela was also posthumously honored with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2026.

Fela was nominated in 2021 and led the fan vote with 500K+ votes but didn’t make the final cut then. This 2026 induction finally recognizes him.

Over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals voted to decide the honorees.
