LOCAL NEWS: OKOWA DECLARES INTENTION TO CONTEST FOR SENATOR AGAINST NWOKO.

Former Delta State governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa has declared his intention to run for the Delta North Senatorial District seat in 2027

This was made known on Sunday, April 12 when Delta North political leaders stormed Okowa’s Asaba residence to urge him to run. The group was led by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme and included former and serving National Assembly members.
Ex-Minority Leader Ndudi Elumelu moved the motion for Okowa to return to the Senate, seconded by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, and it was unanimously adopted.
Okowa said he was “surprised and overwhelmed” and accepted: “I feel very loved and honoured, and I have no choice but to accept”.

Leaders like Chief Chris Agbobu and Doris Uboh called Okowa, a seasoned administrator and consensus builder whose experience is vital for federal representation. The Agugu Anioma socio-political group also endorsed him earlier, citing his “outstanding record of service, integrity, and transformational leadership”

Part of Okowa’s declaration included an apology for backing current Senator Ned Nwoko in 2023 saying he made a “mistake” with this now setting up a potential 2027 contest between Okowa, Nwoko, and Nwaoboshi for the seat come next year election.

APC House of Assembly contender John Ikechukwu Ozegbe lauded Okowa’s decision, calling him “tried, tested and proven” and the “best man for the job”.
