A mass shooting unfolded Wednesday morning at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, leaving 20 people injured before the suspected gunman took his own life, authorities confirmed.
Emergency calls came in shortly after 8:30 a.m., prompting a massive response from local police along with agents from the FBI, ATF, and Minnesota State Patrol. The school, which serves pre-K through eighth grade, had just begun its day with a scheduled morning Mass when gunfire broke out.
Investigators said the shooter, described as a man dressed in black and armed with a rifle, opened fire for several minutes. Witnesses living nearby reported hearing repeated shots echoing through the neighborhood.
Of the victims, five children were transported to the hospital for treatment. Officials have not yet released detailed information on the conditions of those wounded.
Governor Tim Walz issued a statement within the hour, calling the incident a “horrific act of violence” during the first week of school. “I’m praying for our students and teachers,” he said, adding that state agencies remain on the scene.
City officials later posted on X that the situation had been “contained.”
Former President Donald Trump also commented, saying he had been briefed and that federal officials would continue to track the developments. He asked the public to keep the school community in their prayers.
