Why Shatta Wale was arrested in Ghana

According To A Report From notjustok, Here is why popular Ghanaian music sensation, Shatta Wale, was arrested in Ghana on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

It has been revealed that Shatta Wale was detained on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in connection with a tax investigation linked to his purchase of a luxury vehicle, according to the BBC.

It was reported that the artist’s yellow Lamborghini was seized earlier this month at the request of US authorities, who alleged the car was tied to proceeds from a criminal enterprise.

The case is reportedly linked to a wider network involving another Ghanaian, Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is serving a seven-year prison sentence in the US for fraud, BBC reports.

Shatta Wale’s management, however, stated that his detention was strictly related to “tax obligations,” without addressing the US allegations. In a statement shared on social media, his team noted that the musician voluntarily appeared before Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Wednesday.

The singer, whose real name is Charles Nii Armah, is one of Ghana’s biggest music stars and gained global recognition after collaborating with Beyoncé on the 2019 track ‘Already’. Following the seizure, Wale denied any ties to Amuah, insisting he was only a “third-party owner” of the Lamborghini, estimated to have cost over 150,000 dollars and was unaware of who shipped it into the country.

BBC further reports that authorities plan to return the car to the US to help with restitution for Amuah’s victims. Amuah and his co-conspirators were convicted of impersonating vendors to defraud nearly 70 public and private organisations, according to US court records cited.

Meanwhile, Wale’s management has urged fans to remain calm, assuring that his legal team is cooperating fully with authorities. The detention comes as Ghana works closely with US agencies to dismantle international fraud operations. Earlier this month, the FBI and the US Justice Department extradited three Ghanaian nationals accused of orchestrating a $100 million scheme involving romance scams and phishing attacks.

Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) release official statement on Shatta Wale’s arrest
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has confirmed that Ghanaian musician Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, was interrogated in connection with an ongoing investigation into a 2019 Lamborghini Urus.

The vehicle has been identified by the FBI and the US Justice Department as proceeds from a $4 million crime involving one Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian currently serving a prison term in the United States.

According to EOCO, the interrogation, which lasted several hours, ended with Shatta Wale being granted bail of GHC10,000,000 with two sureties. Investigators revealed that he has so far been unable to identify the individual who sold him the vehicle, claiming he purchased it “from the street” through someone referred to as “Zak,” whose full identity and contact details he no longer possesses.

EOCO also noted that Shatta Wale does not hold valid documentation to prove ownership of the vehicle, apart from a customs declaration document bearing the name of Nana Kwabena Amuah.

The case remains open, with Shatta Wale expected to cooperate further as inquiries continue.
