Nigerian music star Ruger recently sat down with Big Boy on the Midday Show to discuss his latest hit single featuring Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage. The track, a vibrant fusion of Brazilian Funk, has been making waves with its unique sound and electrifying energy.
Ruger revealed that while he usually completes his songs in the studio, this time, he left an open verse, looking for the perfect artist to bring an extra spark. That’s when Tiwa Savage came to mind.
“I knew she was the one to elevate the song,” Ruger said. Within a week of sending her the track, Tiwa delivered her vocals, leaving Ruger “blown away.”
The artiste shared his decision to experiment with Brazilian Funk, explaining his desire to push boundaries and create music that stands out. “I feel like some of our songs don’t last long in the memory of people because they sound the same,” he noted. To break that cycle, Ruger collaborated with his producer, Cooks, on the track, which they initially dubbed the “Toma sound.”
Aware that the fresh sound might take time to resonate with Nigerian audiences, Ruger strategically previewed the song in November, giving fans time to warm up to it before its official release. The risk has paid off, with the track gaining significant attention for its innovative sound and dynamic collaboration.
Ruger’s bold approach to music-making continues to set him apart, and his partnership with Tiwa Savage further cements his position as a trailblazer in the global Afrobeat scene.
