Nigerian streamer Hamzat Habeeb Adelaja known as Peller has sparked outrage online after advising against same-tribe marriage during a TikTok livestream.
Peller said
“If you are a Yoruba and want to marry a Yoruba in 2026, bro, your life is finish. And if you are Igbo, you want to marry Igbo, your life is finish”
He argued that interethnic relationships offer something different because partners from the same ethnic group already share cultural knowledge, traditions, and ways of thinking, so one partner can’t introduce something new.
“You need to marry another tribe, don’t marry from the same tribe” implying that such marriages won’t work.
Peller, who identifies as Yoruba, said he intends to marry a woman from Benin: “Me, wey go marry my Benin girl, na no know say I get wetin I dey think. I no fit marry my Yoruba girl, God forbid”
He added he would still not marry a Yoruba woman even if asked to take another wife:
“Ifyou dem tell us say I pay now, you can plus one, bro, I no go still even marry my Yoruba girl. Na fact I dey tell you”
He referenced his own background to explain his position – noting that both his parents are Yoruba – and appealed “Make Una no vex” for his controversial take.
The comments have sparked divided reactions online, with many defending same-tribe marriages as preserving culture while others argue compatibility matters more than ethnicity.
