SPORTS: BREAKING: LEICESTER CITY RELEGATED TO ENGLISH 3RD TIER 10 YEARS AFTER PREMIER LEAGUE GLORY.

Leicester City have been relegated to League One just 10 years after their 5,000-1 Premier League title miracle in 2016.

The 2-2 draw vs Hull City at King Power Stadium on Tuesday April 22, 2026 confirmed relegation. Hull took the lead 18th min through Liam Millar after a Begovic error. Leicester then went 2-1 up with goals in 2 minutes from Jordan James and Luke Thomas. Oli McBurnie’s 63rd-minute equaliser for Hull sealed Leicester’s fate with The Foxes ending 23rd in Championship with 42 points from 44 games, 7 points from safety with 2 games left.

The fall: Between 2016 to 2026 Leicester City were Premier League champions (2015/16) at 5,000-1 odds under Italian talisman Claudio Ranieri. They then reached the 2016/17 Champions League quarter-finals were they were eliminated by Atletico Madrid.
2020/21 season then sae them lift the FA Cup with a famous 1-0 victory against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea.
In 2021/22 season they reached Conference League semi-finals before getting relegated from Premier League the following season. They then got promoted back to Premier League by winning the 2023/24 EFL Championship.
The club struggled to stay aloft again getting relegated back to the Championship for the 2025/26 season. Legend Jamie Vardy left after a fruitful 13 years career at the club after relegation was confirmed. The club headed back to the Championship with the hope of getting their feet back and returning to the Premier league but were slammed 6-point deduction this season by EFL for breaching EFL profit & sustainability rules. Even getting those points back wouldn’t have saved them.
Managerial changes also led to their fall as Marti Cifuentes was sacked in January, Gary Rowett brought in record since then were 1 Win, 7 draws, and 3 losses in 11 games.
This is only Leicester’s 2nd season in the third tier in 142 years. The last time was 2008-09 under Nigel Pearson, when they won League One with 96 points.

“The club is rotten from top to bottom with overpaid players failing to perform, financial mismanagement, a deeply unpopular hierarchy and a bitterly divided fanbase”. Fans chanted “Sack the board!” as owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha watched.

Manager Gary Rowett reacted to the relegation saying “This club won the Premier League not too many moons ago… I think we can be equally as disappointed with how poor this moment is. The club has to rise again but it has to learn its lessons”

Leicester join Swindon, Wolves, Sunderland and Luton in the group of clubs to go from Premier League to League One successively.
