ENTERTAINMENT: “NIGERIAN ACTORS STRUGGLE FINANCIALLY AND BEG ONLINE CAUSE OF LACK OF ROYALTIES” – PATIENCE OZOKWO.

Veteran Nollywood actress, Patience Ozokwo has shed light on why actors in the industry often find themselves in financial difficulties in her recent appearance on “Curiosity made me ask” hosted by Isbae U. According to her, the main reason is the lack of royalties paid to actors for their work.

She explained that actors are usually paid a one-time fee for their roles, with no residual income from repeated broadcasts or distribution of their films. This means that once the initial payment is made, the actor doesn’t receive any further compensation, even if the film continues to generate revenue.
“The problem why you see us beg is because they don’t give us royalties.

We just work and toil so hard, and then that peanut, that money you gave us on board to come and shoot for you, is the only thing we get.” she told Isbae U.

Ozokwor also pointed out that actors in developed countries receive royalties, which provides them with a steady income stream even after their work has been completed “Go and look at the smallest actors in developed countries. Every work they do fetches them money every day of their lives. Even when they are gone, their families still live on that. We, we are still working hard.”

In contrast, Nollywood actors often struggle financially, forcing some to seek public assistance when faced with medical bills or other challenges.
The actress noted that many actors are now turning to YouTube as an alternative platform to earn income directly from their content.

Additionally, Ozokwor highlighted the financial pressures actors face, including the need to maintain a certain image and lifestyle, as well as demands from family and acquaintances. She emphasized that actors are often perceived as wealthy due to their public presence, making it difficult for them to save money.
