Yeni Kuti, the daughter of the late legendary singer Fela Kuti, has advised young artists to focus on their own progress and compare themselves to their peers, rather than trying to measure up to legends like her father.
“Don’t compare chalk and cheese. Fela is a legend, give him his flowers. He has done his part. If you are still talking about him 29 years after his death and you’re comparing yourself with him, you’re not a dead man walking. So, comparing yourself with him is not a good thing, Compare yourself with your peers and leave our legends alone. We have legends, let’s respect them.” she said in a recent interview with Arise TV.
This is coming up after Afrobeats star Ibrahim Ayodeji Balogun popularly known as Wizkid recently had a beef with Yeni’s younger brother Seun Kuti regarding his fans comparing him with their father. Seun Kuti had shunned Wizkid fans known as “Wizkid FC” to stop comparing him with his father saying it is a disrespect to his father’s legacy. Wizkid had responded by saying he is “bigger” than Fela and called Seun Kuti a “fool at 40” who is fighting his fans after his father fought for Nigeria.
Fela was recently honoured at Grammy Honors Party in Los Angeles with the late singer receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammys.
