Ex-Super Eagles captain and defender William Troost-Ekong has officially joined Qatari club Al Ahli SC, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career. The 32-year-old Nigerian defender signed a contract with Al Ahli until June 2028, bringing his wealth of experience and international success to the Doha-based club.
Before the move, Ekong previously played for Saudi side Al Kholood, making 49 appearances and scoring twice. He was also a journeyman in Europe before heading to the Middle East graduating from Tottenham Hotspurs academy and going on to play for Groningen, Dordretch, KAA Gent, Haugesund, Bursaspor, Udinese, Watford, Salernitarna and PAOK where he won the Greek Championship.
On the international scene, Troost-Ekong was a key figure in the Nigerian national team, announcing his retirement from international football last year to focus on his club career after 82 caps with 8 goals winning both Runners up and Third place medals. His arrival is seen as a significant boost for Al Ahli SC as they aim to strengthen their squad and finish the season strongly.
After being handed his favourite number 5 jersey number at the new club Ekong tweeted “Next Chapter! Happy to be here part of the @ahliqat family!” on his X to confirm the move.
