Michael Carrick is the favorite to become Manchester United’s caretaker manager, having overtaken Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the running. Carrick, a former United midfielder, has been in advanced talks with the club and has impressed INEOS executives in discussions. He’s expected to lead the team until the end of the season, with United aiming to announce a decision by Wednesday, allowing the chosen candidate to prepare for the Manchester derby on Saturday.
Carrick’s experience as a caretaker manager, having briefly taken the reins in 2021 after Solskjaer’s departure, where he managed 3 games of which he was undefeated winning 2 and drawing 1 and his familiarity with the club, make him a strong contender. Solskjaer, who was initially favored, held talks with United over the weekend, but Carrick’s deep understanding of the club is seen as a significant advantage.
Manchester united are currently seventh in the premier league table on 32 points from 21 games. They are currently out of every competition in the current campaign having lost 1 – 2 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA cup third round on Sunday January 11. They will now focus on making the UEFA Champions League next season and if given the caretaker job, Carrick will want to oversee that and give a happy ending to this already horrendous season.
