The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has declared Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), medically fit to stand trial. According to the NMA panel’s report, Kanu’s ailment is not life-threatening, and he can adequately receive care within the State Security Services (SSS) medical facility. A court-appointed medical team from the NMA conducted an independent assessment of Kanu’s health.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that Kanu’s trial will proceed, with six consecutive days scheduled for the defense to present its case starting October 23.
The court granted Kanu’s legal team a private, 3-hour consultation with him in the courtroom to prevent potential surveillance.
The court’s decision to proceed with the trial follows conflicting medical reports submitted by the prosecution and defense. The NMA panel’s findings have resolved the dispute, allowing the judicial process to continue.
Kanu faces terrorism charges related to his alleged secessionist activities, which he denies.
