SPORTS: WAFCON TO INCREASE TEAMS FROM 12 TO 16 FROM 2026 TOURNAMENT.

The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is expanding from 12 teams to 16 teams starting with the 2026 edition in Morocco. This decision aims to increase competitiveness and provide more opportunities for female players across the continent. The top four teams in the competition will qualify directly for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, while two additional teams will have a chance to join through the inter-confederation playoffs.
The qualifiers will feature 38 African nations competing for spots in the final phase, with the host nation Morocco qualifying automatically. The first round of qualifiers took place from February 17-26, 2025, and the second round is scheduled for October 20-28, 2025.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the prize money for the tournament, with the 2024 edition seeing a 45% increase to $3.45 million, and the winner receiving $1 million.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe emphasized the organization’s commitment to developing women’s football in Africa, ensuring players can make a career out of the sport.
“I am pleased with the progress we’ve made in women’s African football, Part of my starting point is ensuring both men and women are paid well and can make a career out of football. I can assure you women’s football will continue to improve because that is an area we are focusing on a lot.” He said.

Morocco will be hosting the 2026 tournament which will be featuring 12 times for the third consecutive time. The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 17 to April 3, 2026. The tournament will feature three groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group and the two best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage.
