There’s been a violent clash between Urhobo and Itsekiri youths in Odion community, Delta State, resulting in one death and several injuries. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 27, 2025, during the Urhobo’s age-long masquerade festival.
The conflict began when Urhobo youths attempted to celebrate their festival, but were allegedly warned not to enter the Iyara axis, an Itsekiri stronghold. This led to an altercation that spiraled into a gun battle. One Urhobo youth, Jerry Aduara, a member of the Warri South Local Government Council Peace Committee, was shot dead while trying to broker peace.
Several others sustained injuries. Police reinforcements were deployed to disperse the warring groups with tear gas. A suspect has been arrested in connection with the killing.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed security agencies to arrest anyone caught brandishing firearms or instigating violence. He appealed for calm and restraint, emphasizing the need for peace to sustain development in the state.
The Warri South Peace Committee had given permission and security clearance for the Urhobo festival, but the Itsekiri youths disrupted the event despite these precautions.
The incident has sparked fears of renewed ethnic conflict in Delta State, and security operatives have been deployed to prevent further escalation.
