Vice President Kashim Shettima met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN headquarters to discuss Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
During their meeting, Shettima emphasized the need for the UN to support Nigeria’s quest for a permanent seat, highlighting the country’s significant contributions to peacekeeping and security in Africa.
Shettima called on world leaders to recommit themselves to reforming the UN Security Council, emphasizing that the current structure is outdated and doesn’t reflect the diversity and plurality of the world.
Nigeria has contributed to at least 41 peacekeeping missions globally, deploying over 200,000 troops in UN operations, and has played a significant role in promoting peace and security in Africa.
The UN Secretary-General has also called for urgent reform of the Security Council, criticizing its outdated structure and lack of representation for Africa, which undermines the body’s credibility and global legitimacy.
The meeting is part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to secure a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, with the country’s leaders emphasizing its suitability to represent Africa on the global stage due to its large population, economic size, and peacekeeping contributions.
