Erik ten Hag has indeed been sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just two Bundesliga games, following a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen on Saturday. The team blew a two-goal lead in the match, which seemed to be the final straw for the club’s hierarchy.
Leverkusen’s managing sporting director, Simon Rolfes, stated that the decision wasn’t easy, but the past few weeks showed that building a new team under Ten Hag’s setup wasn’t feasible
Ten Hag’s tenure at Leverkusen lasted only 62 days, and he managed just three competitive games – a win in the DFB-Pokal against Grossaspach, and two lackluster Bundesliga performances, including a 2-1 loss to Hoffenheim.
The club’s board seemed unconvinced of Ten Hag’s abilities to oversee the dramatic rebuild following the departures of key players like Xabi Alonso, Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Granit Xhaka
The assistant coaching staff will temporarily take over training duties. Ten Hag was previously sacked by Manchester United in October 2024.
Leverkusen has undergone significant changes, including the departure of key players and the signing of new talent, such as Eliesse Ben Seghir for €35m.
