Former President Donald Trump has terminated former Vice President Kamala Harris’ Secret Service protection, which had been extended beyond the standard six months through a previously undisclosed directive issued by President Joe Biden. The revocation is set to take effect on September 1, 2025.
By law, former vice presidents are entitled to six months of protection after leaving office. Harris’ initial protection period ended on July 21, but Biden reportedly authorized an additional year shortly before leaving the White House. Trump’s letter to the Secretary of Homeland Security authorized discontinuing “any security-related procedures previously authorized…beyond those required by law.”
Harris is preparing for a multi-city book tour to promote her memoir 107 Days, which will increase her public profile. Her team has expressed concern that losing federal protection will reduce access to security intelligence and remove federal coverage of her Los Angeles residence. Her husband, Doug Emhoff, had already lost his personal detail under standard rules.
California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, criticized the decision as politically motivated and raised concerns about her safety. Officials are reportedly exploring alternative security measures, potentially involving local law enforcement.
