Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and other African Democratic Congress (ADC) leaders have on Wednesday April 8 protested peacefully in Abuju, Nigeria capital city, over concerns about the country’s electoral system.
The leaders marched to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters, expressing dissatisfaction with the recent Electoral Act and demanding electoral accountability.
The protest was sparked by the signing of the Electoral Act 2026, which the opposition parties consider anti-democratic and an attempt to subvert the will of the people in the 2027 general elections. The leaders, including David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Chibuike Amaechi, condemned the Act, stating it’s an overreach by the All Progressives Congress (APC) federal government.
The ADC leaders are seeking reforms to ensure free, fair, and credible elections. They’re also pushing for the removal of provisions they deem obnoxious and an infringement on political parties’ internal affairs.
“We, members and leaders of the ADC, and other well-meaning Nigerians, lovers of democracy, are saying that our democracy must not be killed.
We say no to a one-party system. We say NO to a one-party system, and for that, today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” Peter Obi stated.
