LOCAL NEWS: VCDF & DELTA GOVERNMENT COMBINES TO CONDUCT 113 FREE CATARACT SURGERIES IN KWALE COMMUNITY.

The Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF) partnered with the Delta State Government and Sterling Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO) to conduct 113 free cataract surgeries at the Central Hospital, Kwale, Delta State. The surgeries benefited residents from Ndokwa East and Ndokwa West Local Government Areas. This initiative is part of the Sustainable Primary Eye Care Services (SPECS) Programme, aiming to restore sight and dignity to underserved communities.

The SPECS Programme has screened over 11,858 individuals and conducted more than 1,070 cataract and pterygium surgeries across Delta and Akwa Ibom states. The foundation has also trained 87 health workers and screened 2,447 individuals across 62 outreach camps in various communities.

Cataracts account for 44% of blindness cases in Nigeria, with over 1.1 million people living with vision impairment nationwide. In Delta State alone, more than 25,000 residents are affected by untreated cataracts.
