A food influencer from the Philippines, Emma Amit, 51, has tragically died two days after eating a poisonous “devil crab” in a social media video. She had gathered the crab and other shellfish with friends in a mangrove forest near her home in Puerto Princesa, Palawan and cooked them with coconut milk and consumed them with camera showing her lifting up the devil’s crab before taking a bite.
After consuming the crab, she began experiencing severe symptoms, including seizures the next day, and was rushed to the hospital, where she passed away on February 6.
“This is really saddening because they should have known,” he said. “She and her husband, they are both fisherfolk. They live by the sea, so I know they know about this devil crab that’s dangerous to eat. So why did she eat it? That is what I’m confused about.
I saw the shells, there were around eight. I don’t know if all of them were devil crabs, but they all looked alike,” Laddy Gemang the chief of Luzviminda Village expressed his sadness over the unfortunate incidence.
The devil crab contains powerful neurotoxins like saxitoxin and tetrodotoxin, making it one of the most poisonous crabs in the Philippines. Laddy Gemang also warned residents to be cautious when eating seafood, especially unfamiliar species.
