SPORTS: WAFCON: SOUTH AFRICA TO HOST TOURNAMENT AS MOROCCO WITHDRAWS.

South Africa will host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after Morocco withdrew, with the tournament scheduled from March 17 to April 3, 2026. Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Peace Mabe, announced this, citing South Africa’s readiness and infrastructure.

“We seized an opportunity that presented itself because we have the necessary infrastructure and support, When Morocco said they wouldn’t be able to organise it, we said South Africa is available and ready to host.” Mabe said.

However, the South African sports ministry later clarified that no formal decision has been taken, and Morocco remains the official host.

Morocco were the hosts of the recently concluded Men’s AFCON where they lost to Teranga Lions of Senegal in a very controversial final that saw fans call for the nation to be banned from hosting any CAF tournament due to claimed bias officiating and favouritism. This may be have been one of the reasons they are withdrawing from hosting this incoming tournament.
