SPORTS: CAF FINE ALGERIA FOOTBALL TEAM $100,000 FOR MISCONDUCT DURING NIGERIA GAME.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $100,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and suspended players after their quarter-final clash with Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match suspension, while defender Rafik Belghali was handed a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended.
“Suspend Algeria player Luca Zidane for two (2) CAF official matches with the Algeria national team for misconduct,
Suspend Algeria player Rafik Belghali, player for four (4) CAF official matches with the Algeria national team, for aggressive and intimidating behaviour towards the match referee at the end of the match. However, two (2) matches are suspended for a probationary period of one (1) year, starting from the date of the present decision.” CAF Disciplinary Board reads.

The sanctions stem from post-match incidents, including player misconduct, crowd violence, and security lapses. The FAF has announced plans to appeal the decision, citing disproportionate penalties. CAF’s disciplinary committee cited various breaches, including $25,000 fine for inappropriate behavior by players and officials, $5,000 fine for use of smoke bombs and throwing objects, $10,000 fine for failure to comply with security measures and $50,000 fine for displaying banknotes towards match officials

CAF aims to clamp down on conduct undermining the tournament’s credibility and safety.
