Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, ending a 15-year career with the Super Eagles. The 33-year-old, who is Nigeria’s most capped player with 111 appearances, shared the news on social media, expressing gratitude to fans, teammates, and coaches.
Musa’s achievements include winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and becoming Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup with four goals. He also captained the team and played for several clubs, including Leicester City, CSKA Moscow, and Al Nassr.
In his heartfelt message, Musa said, “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning. I know I gave my best. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle, To become the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football is a great honour. Every time I wore the jersey, I understood the responsibility that came with it, Winning the 2013 AFCON will always stand out. Scoring at the World Cup, against Argentina and Iceland, are memories I will always carry with me. To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for”.
Ahmed Musa currently play in the Nigerian Professional Football League with Kano Pillars, his third spell at the club. His retirement from the Nigerian National team came barely two weeks after Skipper Williams Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON’s retirement also from the National team.
