Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed support for the creation of Anioma State, emphasizing that the agitation must follow constitutional provisions. The Governor’s Chief of Staff, Prince Johnson Erijo, conveyed this message to Anioma youths who staged a peaceful protest at the Government House in Asaba, calling for the creation of Anioma State and its inclusion in the South-East geopolitical zone.The protesters, representing various local government areas, appealed to the Delta State Government for political and moral backing, emphasizing their Igbo identity and cultural affinity with the South-East region.
The Delta State Government has clarified that it is not opposed to the creation of Anioma State, provided the demand is pursued strictly in line with due constitutional processes. The process involves submitting petitions and memoranda to the National Assembly, followed by legislative consideration and a referendum.
Prince Erijo urged Anioma stakeholders to speak with one voice, strengthening their campaign.
The Anioma areas of Delta state includes the nine (9) local government areas in the Delta North Senatorial District that is represented at the Senate house by Senator Ned Nwoko who is one of the agitators for the state creation. the local government areas includes Ndokwa East, Ndokwa west, Ukwuani, Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North, Ika South, Oshimili North, and Oshimili South. Asaba the current Capital of Delta state is suggested as the natural capital of Anioma State, should the proposed state should be created with Delta State designating a new capital.
