Guinea-Bissau’s ousted President Umaro Sissoco Embalo has arrived in Senegal after being detained by military forces that toppled his government. The military, led by General Horta Inta-A, seized power on Wednesday, November 26, citing a plot to manipulate election results. Embalo, who claimed victory in the presidential election, was taken into custody but later released and flown to Senegal on a chartered military plane.
The coup has sparked widespread condemnation from regional and international organizations, including the African Union, ECOWAS, and the United Nations, which are calling for the restoration of constitutional order and the release of detained officials. General Horta Inta-A has been sworn in as the transitional president, with a one-year mandate after suspending the electoral process and blocking the release of results.
ECOWAS has suspended Guinea-Bissau from its decision-making bodies, following the coup and the AU has also condemned the coup. The coup is seen as part of a broader pattern of instability in West Africa, with concerns about the impact on democracy and security.
