NEWS: NIGERIA AMONG COUNTRIES WHERE CHRISTIANS ARE PERSECUTED – POPE XIV.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed concern over the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, specifically highlighting the country’s Christian communities that face violent attacks and discrimination. In a recent statement, he listed Nigeria alongside other countries like Bangladesh, Mozambique, and Sudan, where Christians are experiencing similar challenges.

The Pope on Sunday November 16, wrote on his official X “I think especially of Bangladesh, Nigeria, Mozambique, Sudan, and other countries from which we frequently hear of attacks on communities and places of worship. God is a merciful Father who desires peace among all His children!”.

The Pope’s remarks echo concerns raised by United States President Donald Trump, who redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to reports of religious persecution. However, the Nigerian government has rejected this classification, affirming that the country remains secular.

Nigeria’s Benue State has been a region of particular concern, with attacks on Christian communities and places of worship.

Many Christians have been killed, displaced, or forced to flee their homes due to violence and extremist attacks. The Nigerian government has rejected claims of persecution, emphasizing its commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of faith.

The Vatican and other international bodies have expressed concern over the rising violence and persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
