ENTERTAINMENT: 2FACE REVEALS HOW ‘ AFRICA QUEEN’ BROUGHT HIM SUCCESS AND STRUGGLE

2Face Idibia, the legendary Nigerian musician, has revealed that ‘African Queen’ is the song that catapulted him to stardom, and it’s also a track he deeply connects with. However, he admits that the song has become a double-edged sword, bringing both immense benefits and challenges.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Entertainment & Lifestyle show, 2Face shared his mixed emotions about the iconic song. “African Queen has been a huge blessing, but it’s also become a problem for me,” he said, expressing gratitude for the opportunities it brought. Released in 2004, ‘African Queen’ was a game-changer, making 2Face the first African artist to win prestigious awards like the BET, MTV Europe, and MOBO awards.

Despite the song’s success, controversy has surrounded its authorship for years. 2Face’s former bandmate, Blackface, has repeatedly claimed that 2Face stole the song from him. While 2Face acknowledged that ‘African Queen’ was a collaboration with his former bandmates, he denied the allegations, sparking a debate that has lingered for over two decades.

The song’s legacy was further cemented when Billboard named it the “greatest Afrobeats song of all time” in August 2025, reigniting the controversy. For 2Face, ‘African Queen’ remains a significant part of his career, but it’s clear that the song’s impact goes beyond just its catchy beats – it’s a testament to the power of music and the complexities of creative ownership.
