Nigerian Afrobeat star, Yemi Alade, has opened up about how lying about her age for three years led to a period of depression. She revealed that she spent three years telling people she was 22, only to discover she was actually 25. This realization left her mentally shaken and depressed for a few days.
According to Yemi, the experience taught her how self-deception can impact mental health and emphasized the importance of self-acceptance and authenticity.
In a recent interview with Chude Jideonwo, “Johnny” crooner shared that during those three years, she became disconnected from reality, trying to live up to a false identity.
“There was a time someone asked me how old I was, and for about three years I kept saying 22, Then one day I calculated it and realised I was already 25. I was depressed for a few days because my mind couldn’t process it. It was mental for three years I didn’t know my age.”
She now uses this experience to promote honesty and self-awareness, especially for young people in the entertainment industry.
