The Federal Government of Nigeria has filed a lawsuit against Senator Peter Onyekachi Nwebonyi, Senator representing Ebonyi North Central Senatorial District, for allegedly defaming Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The defamation charges stem from comments made by Nwebonyi during media appearances on various television stations, including Arise TV, Channels TV, TVC, and News Central.
“This is a woman that accused Yahaya Bello and others of sexual harassment.
Are you the only woman in Nigeria, Senator Natasha? What is wrong with you? This is madness. Nigerian women should rise against this.” Senator Nwebonyi was alleged to have declared during a live interview on March 3rd 2025 in Arise TV.
Nwebonyi referred to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan as “a habitual accuser” and “a woman who uses her gender as a weapon”.He also called her “a known blackmailer” and made personal remarks about her family life, stating she’s “a mother of six from different men” with questionable character.
Nwebonyi further alleged that Akpoti-Uduaghan had falsely accused several individuals, including Yahaya Bello and Reno Omokri, of sexual harassment.
The Federal Government has filed a five-count charge against Nwebonyi, marked CR/547/2025, at the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. If convicted, Nwebonyi faces potential penalties of imprisonment, a fine, or both, as stipulated under Section 392 of the Penal Code Act.
A member of All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator Nwebonyi has been representing Ebonyi North Central Senatorial District since 2023.
