Comedian Alibaba supports polygamy for both practical and cultural reasons. He believes it helps stabilize homes by fostering cooperation among wives and discouraging infidelity among men.
According to him, in some traditional societies, women even encouraged their husbands to take additional wives to maintain family peace and prevent extramarital affairs. Polygamy is deeply rooted in some Nigerian cultures, particularly in traditional Yoruba and Ibadan practices.
Alibaba believes that when wives know their husband has other wives, they are more likely to behave and cooperate, as they know they can be replaced if they misbehave.
“Some people believe that when you have only one wife, you may not be able to control the wife. But when she knows there’s another woman in the picture, she will calm down because she knows that once she misbehave, another one is available, Alibaba said speaking with media personality Nedu in an interview.
“I know of a woman in Ibadan who supported her husband to be a polygamist.
Back then, some women marry young girls and gift to their husbands. Because they don’t want their men having concubines. When a man dies, and his wife is still young or has little children, the family may call the brothers and say, which of you can take care of this girl.
That’s also part of how polygamy evolved People may argue that it’s not right, but many of those same people end up having children with multiple partners,” the Comedian added.
What do you think about Alibaba’s views on polygamy? Do you think it’s a cultural practice that still has relevance today or is it an outdated tradition?
