NEWS: MAY AGBAMUCHE-MBU TAKES OVER AS ACTING CHAIRMAN OF INEC.

May Agbamuche-Mbu has taken over as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the formal handover of responsibilities by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who is proceeding on terminal leave. The handover ceremony took place at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a stakeholders’ meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners.

Agbamuche-Mbu is a seasoned legal practitioner with over three decades of experience with the public and private sectors. She served as a National Commissioner at INEC, representing the South-South geopolitical zone. She also chaired the Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee of INEC.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu handed over to her after leading INEC for almost a decade, overseeing multiple election cycles and implementing digital innovations. He stepped down after completing two terms as INEC Chairman, citing the need for a smooth transition.

Agbamuche-Mbu will oversee INEC’s operations until a substantive chairman is appointed. Preparations for the 2027 general elections are already underway, with INEC working on reviewing the voters’ register and other key tasks.
