NEWS: INEC SUSPENDS ELECTORAL WARDS IN WARRI FEDERAL CONSTITUENCY.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the delineation of electoral wards in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State. This decision comes after a peaceful protest by members of the Urhobo and Ijaw communities, who demanded the immediate implementation of a 2022 Supreme Court judgment mandating a fresh delineation of electoral wards in the constituency.

The matter has been escalated to the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) for further review and consideration. The suspension aims to address security concerns and potential unrest in the region.
Despite the suspension, the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will continue as planned, using existing polling units and registration areas.

INEC’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Victoria Eta-Messi, confirmed that the CVR process will proceed without interruption. The Supreme Court judgment in December 2022 declared the existing ward delineation in Warri outdated and unrepresentative of the constituency’s population. INEC initiated consultations in early 2023 and concluded fieldwork in July 2024, presenting a draft report to stakeholders in Warri on April 4, 2025.
