NEWS: DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT DISMISSES HEALTH WORKERS, DEMOTES OTHERS FOR EXTORTION OF PREGNANT WOMEN AND CHILDREN UNDER FIVE.

The Delta State Government has taken decisive action against healthcare workers found guilty of extorting money from pregnant women and children under five, despite the state’s free healthcare policy for these groups by sacking some and demoting others.

Joseph Onojaeme, The Commissioner for Health made this known at the flag-off of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives Project in Ashaka, Ndokwa East Local Government Area of the state on Saturday September 27.

Several health workers were dismissed, while others were demoted for their misconduct.
The government cracked down on health workers who demanded illegal payments for services already covered under the state’s maternal and child health program.
Speaking at the event Joseph Onojaeme says:

“Health workers in the state have done well, but in every 12, there is a Judas. We have received reports of some collecting money from pregnant women and children under five for drugs, while still forwarding the bills to the government for payment.

We have demoted some of these fraudulent workers and sacked many within this short period. With continuous monitoring and the support of mothers, these practices will reduce.”

Delta State provides free healthcare to pregnant women and children under five, aiming to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

The state government has emphasized zero tolerance for corruption in the healthcare sector, ensuring that medical services remain accessible and affordable for vulnerable populations.

A special phone line is expected to be made available for citizens to report cases of extortion directly to the governor’s office, promoting transparency and accountability.

Advocacy groups have welcomed the disciplinary action, stressing the need for sustained public awareness campaigns to empower women to demand their rights to free healthcare services.
The Delta State Government reaffirms its commitment to building a healthcare system that is transparent, accessible, and responsive to the needs of its people.
