The death toll from the stampede at actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, India, has risen to 41. The incident occurred on September 27, 2025, during a political event organized by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). 41 people have lost their lives, including 18 women, 14 men, and 9 children which includes 5 girls and 4 boys. Over 60 people were also injured, with some in critical condition. 67 people are reportedly undergoing treatment.
Actor Vijay has expressed his sadness on the incidence and tender heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate tragedy.
“My heart is broken; I am in unbearable, indescribable pain and sorrow, I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to the families of my dear brothers and sisters who lost their lives in Karur. I pray for a speedy recovery for those who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.”

The exact cause is still under investigation, but it’s believed that overcrowding, delayed arrival, and poor crowd management contributed to the tragedy.
The Tamil Nadu government has announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the victims, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for each deceased.
A judicial inquiry has been set up, headed by retired High Court Judge Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. TVK has approached the Madras High Court seeking a CBI probe into the incident.
