Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has successfully raised over ₦20 billion for the completion of the National Library project in Abuja. This initiative was part of her 65th birthday celebration, where instead of hosting a lavish party, she appealed to well-wishers to donate to the “Oluremi at 65 Education Fund” coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Over ₦20 billion has been donated, with more contributions still coming in.
Addressing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, the First Lady said she was a member of the Senate Committee on Education while she was in the senate, adding that the education ministry was not able to build the National Library. The National Library project was initiated in 1981 during the Shehu Shagari administration but has remained unfinished due to funding challenges this Mrs.Tinubu has said she is not happy about .
Mrs. Tinubu expressed her passion for education and libraries, citing their impact on her life and desire to leave a lasting legacy.
She urged Nigerians to adopt a spirit of national service, quoting former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”.
