Jerome Boateng, the German footballer who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, has announced his retirement from professional soccer. He made 76 appearances for the German national team between 2009 and 2018 and spent 10 trophy-laden years with Bayern Munich, lifting 22 major honors, including nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions League trophies.
Boateng was a central figure in Germany’s World Cup success in Brazil, starting all seven matches during their run to the final, including the showpiece match against Argentina, which they won 1-0 in extra-time.
He also established himself as a first-team regular at Bayern, making 363 appearances across all competitions and winning numerous titles.
Boateng has also played for Hertha Berlin, Hamburg, Manchester City, Olympique Lyonnais, Salernitana, and LASK Linz, his last club before retirement.
Boateng expressed gratitude for his football journey, saying, “Football has given me a lot, but now it’s time to move on. Not because I have to, but because I’m ready. I’m grateful for everything, for the teams, the fans, the people who carried me”.
