Legendary Portuguese football manager José Mourinho is close to becoming Benfica’s new manager. According to recent reports, Benfica has reached a preliminary agreement with Mourinho to succeed Bruno Lage, who was dismissed after a Champions League defeat to Qarabag. The contract details are being finalized, and it’s expected that Mourinho will sign soon.
Mourinho briefly managed Benfica in 2000, marking the start of his coaching career.
This potential appointment would be a homecoming for Mourinho, who has gone on to achieve immense success with clubs like FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid. His last club was Turkish Fenerbahce where he was recently dismissed last month’s August after failure to achieve Uefa Champions League qualification.
Benfica faces tough matches, including away games against Chelsea and Newcastle United, and home matches against Bayer Leverkusen, Napoli, and Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Benfica president Rui Costa is under pressure to deliver results, and Mourinho’s appointment is seen as a bold move to steady the team’s faltering campaign. Benfica are currently 6th in the current campaign of the Portuguese Primeira Liga 5 points below leaders Porto but they do have a game in hand.
