Samuel Umtiti, the French defender who won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France, has announced his retirement from professional football at 31.
He shared the news on Instagram, expressing gratitude to clubs, coaches, teammates and fans who supported him throughout his career. Umtiti’s decision comes after years of struggling with chronic knee problems that limited his playing time.
Umtiti scored the decisive goal in the 2018 World Cup semi-final against Belgium, helping France secure a spot in the final, which they eventually won against Croatia. He won 31 caps for the Les Bleus scoring 4 goals.
At club level Umtiti won two La Liga titles and three Copa del Rey trophies with Barcelona, and also played for Lyon and Lille in Ligue 1 winning the Coupe De France and Trophees des Champions with Lyon.
Umtiti’s total honors are 10 major trophies, showcasing his impressive career despite being plagued by injuries.
Umtiti’s career was marked by recurring knee problems, leading to surgeries and long periods on the sidelines.
Despite setbacks, he expressed no regrets, saying he gave his all with passion and thanked everyone who supported him.
