NEWS: NIGERIA NATIONAL GRID COLLAPSES AGAIN

Nigeria’s national grid collapsed again on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, plunging millions of households and businesses into darkness.

The grid’s collapse was attributed to a “system disturbance” caused by generation constraints and frequency imbalance, resulting in a significant load drop that cascaded to other power plants.

Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hrs today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.

Rest assured, we are working closely with the relevant stakeholders to ensure power is restored once the grid is stabilized.Thank you for your patience and understanding,” the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) said in a statement.

The collapse affected major cities, including Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Enugu, and Kaduna, with most distribution companies reporting zero or minimal megawatt allocations.

The outage is expected to have significant economic implications, with businesses forced to rely on costly diesel generators, potentially leading to reduced productivity and job cuts.

Nigerians are growing increasingly frustrated with the recurring grid failures, with many expressing discontent on social media and calling for greater transparency and accountability in the power sector.

Nigeria’s power grid is plagued by outdated infrastructure and insufficient generation capacity, making it prone to frequent collapses.

This incident marks the third grid collapse in 2025, highlighting the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Nigeria has recorded more than 220 grid collapses in the past decade, underscoring the depth of the crisis.
