Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo is speaking out against the industry’s trend of prioritizing physical appearance over talent. He believes that movie making is about being a good actor and performer, not just about having a fine face. Kanayo expressed his concerns in a recent video, stating that the emphasis on looks is stifling talent and creativity in the industry
Kanayo notes that this trend limits opportunities for new and talented actors who may not fit the traditional mold of a “fine face” but possess exceptional acting skills.
“Movie making is not about having a fine face, it’s about being a good actor, a good performer. So, with or without a fine face, that’s what I’ve decided to do. If you don’t like it, well, that’s quite unfortunate” the Veteran said.
He recalls how sponsors and promoters in the early days of Nollywood would label actors as “marketable” or not, effectively killing the careers of promising actors who didn’t fit their criteria.
Kanayo questions how the industry can sustain content and encourage new actors when productions are dominated by a handful of popular faces.
He advocates for a shift in focus towards talent and performance, rather than physical appearance.
Kanayo plans to use his YouTube platform to showcase new and under-recognized actors, providing them with opportunities to shine.
